This Week in Tokyo – 22 May 2018
The latest edition of This Week in Tokyo – a review of the Maction Planet week that was and a look ahead to what’s coming up in and beyond the city. Check out photos from our tours and read insights into our explorations as we get under the skin of the World’s Greatest Metropolis.
Featured image: Your last chance to see ‘Master Hands in the Meiji Period’ at the Crafts Gallery of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo – on until May 27. Amongst many phenomenal pieces of Japanese craftsmanship, it features the epoch-defining ‘Twelve Bronze Falcons’ by Suzuki Chokichi, produced in 1893 and celebrating its 125th anniversary by being exhibited for the first time since a restoration project for the piece began in 2014, which included a reproduction of the ornamental cloth on the perch that was lost immediately after the piece was first exhibited at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago!
Godzilla enjoying a beer at the 2018 Spring Oedo Beer Festival courtesy of Maction Planet guests Steven and Birgit. A perfect end to a perfect day of touring around the World’s Greatest Metropolis.
The May 2018 Tokyo Grand Sumo Tournament is on, and that means Sumo are on the streets… if you know where to look in the backstreets of Tokyo!
Picasso-esque elephant slides in Akagi Children’s Playground about to entertain the kids as we explore the path less travelled with our amazing guests from Finland!
Keep Walking! As part of our word-of-mouth ‘Limited Edition’ tours our guests enjoyed the Hibiya Festival at the newly-opened Tokyo Midtown Hibiya, where several Johnnie Walker “Striding Man” Art Figures were on display. Our friends at TokyoDex collaborated with JonJon Green from Gunma and Osaka-based simo to paint the six 2-metre figures which were displayed around the outdoor venue.
