This Week in Tokyo – 11 April 2023
Welcome to ‘This Week in Tokyo’, a review of the Maction Planet week that was and a look ahead to what’s coming up in the city. Hosted by Mac, our Founder and Lead Guide, you can check out photos from our tours and read insights into our explorations as we get under the skin of the World’s Greatest Metropolis, and beyond!
Header image: A new Suntory ‘Triple Nama’ Beer dropped on 4 April. What makes it a triple? Some of the mash, including grains, is subtracted, reheated and added back – triple decoction. This converts more under-modified malts – not really needed for modern grains. The guys in the advertising look like they know this and are enjoying the fact!

It was a real honour to guide Susan and family – AKA The Mates – on a journey through the World’s Greatest Metropolis. We parted ways a few seconds after this shot, but I left them armed with advice, recommendations and much more to continue maximising their Tokyo time. Judging by the messages they have been sending me since, they have done just that!

It’s a Kichijoji Spring indeed! We’ve been #blessed with a devastatingly great Cherry Blossom season this year…

… and it continues with the blooming of the Yaezakura, like here at the Hanozono Shrine!

Yes, it’s been busy this Sakura season, as the city handles four years of demand in one. To survive it all, one can turn to EX STRONG LOVE & PEACE: This flavour of Matsumoto Kiyoshi’s own-label energy drink contains 162.5mg of caffeine per can. Punchy stuff!
